Buying Guide – Best Laptops for Coding Students

The processor has a significant impact on your laptop when you multitask. A high-end processor lets you switch between different tabs and apps with ease. Also, it ensures that your laptop doesn’t freeze when you compile code or test projects like app development, game development, etc. Even if you have large RAM, but your processor is old, the laptop can quickly start to freeze. We recommend a laptop that comes with at least an i5 processor and the latest generation.

Random-access memory works as the short-term memory of the device. When you run a program, RAM saves its memory and allows you to perform tasks effectively. As a programmer, you need to work with different tabs simultaneously, and at the same time need big RAM to save this data. We don’t say that you need a 16GB or 32GB machine that is high for coding, but a laptop with 8GB of RAM is a perfect choice for you. Also, say no to DDR3 RAM and always use DDR4 RAM, which is more durable, faster, and reliable for coding.

RAM is short-term memory, but SSD is permanent memory. All your apps data, coding data, and software installation are stored in SSD. SSD has a massive impact on laptop performance and makes multitasking easier. Always choose SSD over HDD. We recommend choosing an SSD with at least 256GB of storage.

Programmers rely only on keyboards to compile code, test apps, and more. A reliable keyboard can deliver a smooth and flawless typing experience. The keys must be responsive and quick so that they can accept the order as quickly as possible.

Battery Life

If you travel often or work in an environment that doesn’t have a charging plug, laptop battery life is important to you. However, if it is not, we recommend compromising on this component; There’s a good reason for this. If you have a high-end processor, a big screen, and portability, turning down battery life is no big deal.

Display size is an essential component if you like to compile code on a large screen. A prime display allows you to analyze code on a wider screen and increase your productivity. We don’t say you need a machine with a 17-18 inch display; A 13-inch display will be enough for you.

App Compatibility

Not many websites mention this important component, but I highly recommend checking out this feature as well. If you learn to code, then you need to understand that every learning app requires minimum software compatibility and they recommend going for this configuration for a better experience. Programs like Visual Studio, Anaconda, Sublime Text, etc. can generally run on any device, but for a better experience, you need the latest configuration laptop.

Frequently asked questions related to Coding laptops

How Much RAM Is Required in a Laptop Made for coding?

Usually, programmers and developers will fulfill their needs through 8GB RAM laptops. This is sufficient for standard coding use. However, game developers who rely heavily on good graphics need around 12GB of RAM. For heavy graphic designers and video editors, a maximum of 16GB of RAM is required.

What type of processor is best for laptop coding?

The best laptops for coding boast an Intel i5 or i7 processor. They provide high performance. The higher the number of cores, the higher the speed of the laptop. However, if you don’t want to choose an Intel processor, you can also find laptops with newer AMD processors.

Are 13-inch laptops suitable for coding?

If a developer’s priority is good screen size, then 3-inch laptops will not be ideal for coding. However, more than screen size, performance quality matters when considering a laptop for coding. So, a 13-inch laptop with a Full HD display and the high resolution will be possible for coding needs.

Why is a solid-state drive important for internal storage on laptops for coding?

An SSD becomes essential for developers to consider while buying a laptop. If it’s out of budget, you can always choose a smaller SSD laptop and pair it with a bigger HDD. Also, you can follow SSHD hybrid drives for internal storage. These options will ensure good OS performance and you will be able to access programs, documents, etc easily on the internal storage.

Does coding require an expensive laptop?

Not necessary. For high-end graphic designers and video editors, specific configurations are necessary which increases the cost of laptops. However, for standard coders and developers, mid-range laptops can provide the coding specifications needed to make them affordable for everyone.

After checking all the listed options, you must have already made up your mind about which one might be suitable for your coding job. Nevertheless, if you are interested in some of my unsophisticated thoughts, you are most welcome to conclude with my conclusions. In my opinion, the Apple MacBook Air with the M1 chip is the perfect machine for coding. The laptop comes with a durable body construction, the latest AMD 5000 Series Ryzen 7 5800H processor, and a good quality keyboard and touchpad.

But if your budget is even lower, we’d recommend going with a Chromebook that requires limited resources to deliver excellent performance. For this reason, we have included the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5. Also, if you have an open budget, you can go with more premium options, such as the Dell XPS 13 and Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. Overall, we have tried our best. To provide the best possible option. Still, if you think we missed a worthy addition, you can let us know in the comments section below!
